Ski tourism

The Carpathian Region is one of the few places in Europe suitable for the development of winter kinds of leisure. In the lowlands of the Carpathians snow cover stays, as a rule, from the beginning of December till the end of March, and in the highlands ‒ from October till the end of May or the beginning of June, which is an important factor in the development of ski tourism.
The territory of the Carpathian Region (Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast and Maramures County) is characterized by the availability of ski lifts suitable for skiing and snowboarding and for the use of beginners, children, amateurs and professionals.
The following ski areas are the most popular in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast: Palianutsia, Yablunytsia, Vorokhta in Yaremche town council, Kosiv, Sheshory and Tyudiv in Kosiv district, Verkhovyna, Vyshkiv in Dolyna district and ski areas in Maramures County ‒ Borsha, Izvoare, Mohosha, Sujor and Kavnik.
The development of skiing and winter kinds of leisure facilitates the development of rural tourism in the region, as well as the creation of additional services for the guests, such as ski and tourist equipment rentals, objects of public catering, organization of leisure-time and active rest for tourists.
Palianytsia village of Yaremche town council in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Bukovel Ski Resort.
Bukovel Ski Resort is situated at 920 m above sea level, in 100 km from Ivano-Frankivsk. The highest peak of the resort is Mt. Dovha (1372 m).
The list of ski lifts:

  • Ski lift with the length of 975 m, the height difference is 112 m, traffic capacity is 1440 people per hour, average difficulty.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 740 m, the height difference is 268 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 1067 m, the height difference is 227 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Double ski lift with the length of 1000 m, the height difference is 215 m, traffic capacity is 808 people per hour.
  • Triple ski lift with the length of 1100 m, the height difference is 150 m, traffic capacity is 1800 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 1548 m, the height difference is 336 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 1067 m, the height difference is 227 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 859 m, the height difference is 175 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 1067 m, the height difference is 227 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 1163 m, the height difference is 285 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 1024 m, the height difference is 182 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 1181 m, the height difference is 225 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 1947 m, the height difference is 220 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 1159 m, the height difference is 255 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 847 m, the height difference is 260 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.
  • Four-person ski lift with the length of 652 m, the height difference is 220 m, traffic capacity is 2400 people per hour.

Yablunytsia village of Yaremche town council in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.
Yablunytsia village is situated at about 900 m above sea level. It is one of the first centers of ski tourism in Subcarpathia with the following ski lifts:

  • Mt. Dil ‒ the length of the ski track is 750 m, the height difference is 300 m, traffic capacity is 600 people per hour ‒ normal difficulty.
  • Mt. Mykulynka ‒ the length of the ski track is 850 m, the height difference is 280 m, traffic capacity is 500 people per hour ‒ for beginners.
  • Mt. Mykulynka ‒ the length of the ski track is 760 m, the height difference is 250 m, traffic capacity is 500 people per hour ‒ for beginners. Trail groomer is available.
  • near Yablunytskyi Pass ‒ the length of the ski track is 400 m, the height difference is 100 m, traffic capacity is 300 people per hour ‒ for beginners.

Vorokhta village of Yaremche town council in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.
Vorokhta village is a famous center of winter kinds of sports in Ukraine. There is a ski jump complex and two cable ways, one of which leads to the ski stadium.
Ski lifts:

  • Piatykhatky village ‒ the length of the ski track is 1960 m, the height difference is 270 m, traffic capacity is 400 people per hour ‒ for beginners.
  • Piatykhatky village ‒ the length of the ski track is 250 m, the height difference is 50 m, traffic capacity is 200 people per hour ‒ for beginners.
  • Mt. Rebrovach ‒ the length of the ski track is 200 m, the height difference is 75 m, traffic capacity is 400 people per hour ‒ for ski jumping.
  • Mt. Rebrovach ‒ the length of the ski track is 500 m, the height difference is 200 m, traffic capacity is 250 people per hour ‒ for amateurs.

Vyshliv village of Dolyna region in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. On the territory of ski recreation center ‘Vysokyi Pereval’ functions a ski lift with the length of 700 m, the height difference is 200 m. Traffic capacity is 500 people per hour. The difficulty level is normal, for amateurs.
Bystrytsia village of Nadvirna region in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.
Ski lift with the length of 300-350 m, the ski lift was constructed in 2004, the height difference is up to 60 m (820-760 m above sea level).
Ski centers of the region are situated in Kosiv, Sheshory and Tiudiv in Kosiv region, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast:

  • Kosiv (Mt. Mykhalkova) – the length of the ski track is 950 m, the height difference is 250 m, traffic capacity is 600 people per hour ‒ for sportsmen and amateurs.
  • Sheshory – the length of the ski track is 650 m, the height difference is 140 m, traffic capacity is 460 people per hour ‒ for beginners and amateurs.
  • Tiudiv – the length of the ski track is 450 m, the height difference is 100 m, traffic capacity is 500 people per hour ‒ for beginners.

Verkhovyna region in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast:

  • Verkhovyna (Mt. Pushkar) – the length of the ski track is 350 m, the height difference is 65 m, traffic capacity is 300 people per hour ‒ for beginners.
  • Iltsi – the length of the ski track is 600 m, the height difference is 150 m, traffic capacity is 500 people per hour ‒ for amateurs and sportsmen.

Both of the ski slopes have northern exposition, which gives an opportunity for the snow cover to stay on the slopes from the beginning of December till the end of March. There are several ski equipment rentals, a ski school and a children ski school.
Ski resort ‘Borsha’ in Maramures County is situated near the foot of the Mt. Rodna at 850 m above sea level. Peaks are at the elevation of 1200-1500 m, but Borsha is best known for the biggest natural springboard in Europe (50 m high). The total length of the tracks amounts to 12 km. The main ski lift has the length of 1920 m, the height difference is 497 m.
Isvoare in Maramures County is situated near the foot of Mt. Ignish at 916 m above sea level close to Baia-Mare town (30 km). In summer the territory of the resort is covered with alpine meadows and woods. In winter it is often visited by winter sports fans.
Ski resort ‘Mohosha’ in Maramures County is located at 750 m above sea level, near the foot of Mt. Mohosha (1246 m), at the bank of Lake Bodi close to Baia-Mare town (17 km). Te total length of the tracks is 3600 m, the height difference is 306 m. The resort is served by 3 ski lifts with traffic capacity of 2000 people per hour:

  • two chairlifts with the length of 1300 and 2200 m;
  • multi-skilift with the length of 600 m.

There are three tracks on the territory of the ski resort with the length of 900 m, 1200 m and 1500 m.
Ski resort Suior in Maramures County is situated at the distance of only 2 km from the ski resort ‘Mohosha’. On the territory of Suior there are three tracks (with the length of 3.6 km) and one ski lift, which attract numerous fans of winter sports.
Kavnik town in Maramures County is situated in mountain area, at the foot of Mt. Hutyi at 550 -1050 m above sea level near Baia-Mare town (32 km). Kavnik town has a high potential for the development of mountain tourism and other winter sports. On the territory of the ski resort there is a modern tourist complex for 36 places. The resort consists of 2 areas for skiing ‒ Ikoan and Roat and has 7 tracks. The total length of the tracks is 8.5 km.
